A New Revolution In Medicine
It is difficult to overlook the impact prescription drugs have had on our lives. From maintenance medications that control everything from diabetes to high blood pressure to prescriptions that help fight diseases like cancer, we live longer, healthier, safer lives because of the years of research and development in the field. Today, there is a movement aimed at creating medicines that will do more than improve the quality of our lives, they will also be safe for our environment. There are several different ways to achieve this goal – one is passive and the other active.
Across the world, there are many countries who have recognized the fact that some drugs are having a negative impact on our environment. Because of this, there has been a movement to create a 'passive' way to deal with the problem. This methodology ignores developing new medications in favor of preventing current prescriptions from impacting the environment. This is achieved primarily through regulations aimed at preventing medications from entering into the water supplies and other environmental areas. This methodology has seen limited success.
A more active method for addressing this problem is currently gaining strength. Many pharmaceutical companies are looking for ways to create drugs that are designed to be benign. Drugs manufactured under this methodology will have zero negative impact on the environment. They will be a safe and effective for humans, address medical needs as needed and, most importantly, not cause potential hard to our water ways, animals or air.
In theory, the second, more active, method is a more effective way to prevent environmental damage. Instead of developing ways to prevent potentially hazardous substances from entering the environment, drug companies are simply removing the hazards themselves. This methodology will continue to gain popularity, especially as more companies provide access to information regarding these newer, 'greener,' medications. Databases that provide doctors with green alternatives to traditional medications will only serve to increase the popularity of their use.
Prescription medicines have become an important part of our lives. In large part, we owe the quality of our lives to these medications. It is our responsibility to create and use drugs that are environmentally friendly whenever possible. Patients and doctors alike should actively seek green alternatives to traditional medications to help keep everyone – including the animals and plants that live on our planet – safe and healthy. It is the latest revolution in medicine.
